Being a minority group in the UK and Ireland means that there are a few things to think about when navigating the workplace.
🧱 Set Clear Boundaries
- Don’t shy away from sharing your religious needs - the sooner you do this the earlier you set a precedent.
- Block out Jumu’ah and prayer times on your calendar.
- Be open about fasting during Ramadan, your dietary needs, or avoiding alcohol-related events.
- Be polite, firm, and professional-people respect clarity and good manners (akhlaq).
🕋 Protect Your Salah
- Enquire if your office space or a nearby one has prayer facilities.
- If not available, use meeting rooms, multifaith spaces, quiet corners-even parks.
- In all cases when performing ablution or praying be sure to respect facilities and aim to leave it better than you found it.

Reminder: Virtue of Salah
Salah is non-negotiable-it anchors your day and reminds you of your ultimate purpose of worshipping God
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُون
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍۢ مُّكْرَمُونَ
and who are ˹properly˺ observant of their prayers.
These will be in Gardens, held in honour. (Al-Ma’arij 70:34-35)

Remember that God is Al-Sami (All-Hearing), Al-Basir (All-Seeing). No efforts you make to maintain your daily prayers, no matter how small, will be missed.

👥 Handle Social Norms with Grace
- Avoid awkward handshake moments with a kind smile and a hand over the heart.
- Alcohol at work events? Suggest alternatives: halal lunch spots, coffee catchups, or fun group activities. Another option is to join for food or early networking, then head out.
